Are PhD’s undervalued? We think so! And undervalued by both business and postdocs themselves!

Most postdocs have much to contribute to business.  But we have 2 challenges:

1. Business assumes PhDs are limited to posessing a “set of technical competencies” and not much in the way of people skills, business  knowledge  or financial acumen.

2. Postdocs have a limited business vocabulary to demonstrate their talent beyond their science and technical competencies.

SciPhD seeks to bridge and translate this PhD Talent Gap by providing postdocs, graduate students and even business new hires the tools to discover their academic, research and personal experiences that translate into 24 business competencies. Get That Job! Targeted Resume and Interview Preparation Service

In response to to numerous inquiries, SciPhD now offers individualized services to assist scientists compete for jobs.  The service provides mapping of up to three job descriptions to our 24 core competencies, matching of those critical skills to experience statements based on results of the online self assessment which is included, and generation of targeted resumes.  Research on companies utilizing our network, and individualized coaching will help prepare candidates for the interview process.  Find out more information here.


 

SciPhD One Day Workshops

SciPhD offers one-day training workshops that bring the critical concepts of the SciPhD core competencies to scientists.  The workshop is typically structured in three modules.

MODULE I:  1.5 hour presentation introduces the myths and realities of working in industry.  Focus is on the ciritcal skills valued by industry, how industry perceives academic scientists, and how scientists can relate their own experiences to the core competencies valued in industry.

MODULE II:  Self-Assessment:  All participants take the on-line Self Assessment to learn more about each of the 24 core competencies valued by industry and to self-assess their skiills in each of these areas.  Participants are also guided to develop experience statements for each competency that can be used in developing resumes and cover letters, and in preparing for interviews.

MODULE III:  Concurrent 45 minute workshops that relate core competencies to job requirements and teach participants how to best prepare to respond to job offerings.

Workshop I:  Looks at extracting all the valuable information contained in job ads.  Most job ads contain a tremendous amount of information beyond the scientific/technical requirements for the job.  Learn how to identify and prepare to respond to these other critical requirements as well as how to identify the implicit information contained in job ads.

Workshop 2:  Learn to translate the "operational competency" language typical of job descriptions into the "core competencies" of SciPhD that form the basis of your industry skill-set.  Learn how to identify your developed core skills and bundle them together into the operational competency language that businesses understand.



SciPhD Online Self Assessment

The online assessment tool introduces 24 core competencies in six major areas that are valued by industry.  The program explains how each of these competencies relates to typical activities and experiences of academic scientists and guides the user to evaluate their own strength in each of these competencies.  Brief expereience statements are also constructed for each competency which become the basis for developing targeted resumes and cover letters, and become the foundation in preparing for interviews.  A detailed report is generated at the completion of the assessment that includes all scores, experience statments, and a graphical representation of how the student's scores match the demands for different types of jobs in different types of companies.  The six major areas that the 24 competencies encompas are "Creating the Vision", "Developing People", "Productivity", "Achieving Results", "Communications", and "Financial Acumen".


SciPhD Career Development for Businesses

SciPhD will work with your career development office to proivde a program for recent hires that identifies their competencies and uses that information in creating a career path that maximizes their skills while encouraging their contimued development consistent with the corporate mission.  A combination of the SciPhD self-assessment tool, custom developed training modules, and mapping of the SciPhD core competencies to existing continuing education both within the company and at local or online resources are used to create an effective program to maximize employee impact and improve retention.



SciPhD Custom Training Programs

SciPhD will develop customized training and certificate programs based on mapping the operational competenices critical to your organization to customized core competencies.  SciPhD will work with local, regional and online educational resources to develop programs that meet your needs.  Examples include the Chief Science Officer Training Course certificate program that was developed in collaboration with Montgomery College, The Federal Laboratory Consortium, The Federation for the Advancement of the Sciences and the Montgomery  County Department of Economic Development.  The inaugural class of 20 students graduated on April 9th, 2011. The next CSO training certificate program is scheduled to start June 4th. Registration is now open!



SciPhD Live Webinars

SciPhD staff are available to deliver live webinars supported with followup on-line discussion groups on any topics of interest related to preparing for careers in industry and being successful in those careers.  Topics include networking, competency training, preparing for job searches, and career planning.
