SciPhD
West Coast Tour
This past December, SciPhD held workshops at USC, UCLA and Stanford
University. The response by the students and postdocs was
extremely positive and demonstrated again the critical need for
business training. Academic scientists who desire to transition
to industry jobs are typically competing with hundreds of other
applicants-- both academic scientists, as well as those with industry
experience who have been laid off due to contraction of
biotech/pharma. SciPhD programs help in two important ways.
First, we help the students recognize the important business skills
they have acquired during their academic career, but just haven't
recognized as important, and secondly, we are forging new relationships
with businesses and alliances who are commited to imrpoving workforce
development. The development of education pipelines starting at
the universities, providing the necssary training wtih input from
industry alliances to identify and teach the skills most needed,
provides a path to success that benefits the students, and the
companies. In a similar vein, we are now also working with a
number of universities and non-profit industry consortia to develop
certificate programs to be made available locally at their
institutions. More to come on that in the near future!!
New York
Academy of Sciences Certificate Training Program graduates 67 scholars
On Tuesday, December 2, sixty-seven
graduate students, postdocs, and other scientists completed a nine week
40 hour certificate program based on the SciPhD Trainng Program.
The course included sessions on Leadership, Communications,
Negotiation, First Line Supervision, Project Management, and
Finance. All modules were taught in the context of the 24
business competencies valued by industry, and specifically related back
to experiences and activities common to academic research. The
wrap-up session tied everything together into a practical discussion
using all these skills to develop targeted resumes, prepare for
interviews, and perform better during those interviews. There
were seemingly crazy times where students could be seen throwing fruit,
eating three m&ms or wandering through a maze silently-- all part
of developing as future leaders.
SciPhD
Webinar sponsored by NCET2 and Federal Lab Consortium reaches over 250
attendees
On Wednesday August 17, the
Mid-Atlantic Region of the Federal Laboratory Consortium, Maryland
TEDCO and the National Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer (NCET2)
hosted the "Preparing for Industry Careers" webinar that was presented
by SciPhD co-founder Randall Ribaudo. Over 250 graduate students,
postdocs and faculty logged in for the one hour presentaiton followed
by a Q&A session that discussed the competencies valued by
industry, how they can assess their own skills in each of these areas,
and how to leverage that knowledge for career planning, applying for
jobs, developing targeted resumes and preparing for interviews.
One of the attendees named Brian just sent an e-mail to SciPhD stating:
"I applied your
resume/cover letter strategies presented last week in the NCET2 webinar
and am looking forward to a phone interview next week. You gave me the
courage to change the focus of my letter and bring in more
extracurricular experiences." Prior to attending the webinar,
Brian had not had any success in getting interviews. Hopefully,
with the information Brian learned, his phone interview will lead to an
invitation to be interviewed in person, and ultimately land him a
job!! This is but one small aspect of what the SciPhD program and
services can provide in helping academic scientists enter the industry
job market and be successful in their new careers.

SciphD held a half day workshop at
the University of Minnesota on July 28th where about 100 attendees
signed up to learn how to prepare for careers in industry and be
successful in those careers. The audience included postdocs,
career development professionals, and representativess from local
industries. The program included a 1.5 hour presentation by
co-founder Dr. Randall Ribaudo who introduced the 24 business
competencies valued by industry, related them to their experiences as
academic scientists and taught how to leverage those skills in
preparing for the job hunt. The participants then took the SciPhD
online self-assessment which guides them through the competencies and
helps them develop "experience statements" that demonstrate their
skills. In the afternoon workshop we discussed how to use the
information from the self-assessment to generate powerful resumes,
prepare for interviews, and match job descriptions to their
strengths. Based on the feedback from the attendees, the day was
a great success!!
SciPhD
Workshop at Columbia University Medical Center
SciPhD held a
one day workshop for over 100 postdocs at Columbia University Medical
Center, Friday May 6th. The first 1.5 hour lecture focused on
introducing postdocs to the realities of working in industry, the
business skills that are valued by industry, and how those skills
relate to activities most postdocs have already performed. The
group then went to the computer labs to take the SciPhD online
self-assessment that provides further training on the 24 competencies
valued by industry and guides the students in assessing their own
skills in these areas. Finally the group split into two groups
for concurrent workshops. One workshop focused on identifying all
the explicit and implicit information contained in job ads and how to
use that information in preparing resumes and cover letters and
preparing for interviews. The second workshop focused on
translating the "operational competencies" typically described in job
ads and company literature into the core competencies that are the
focus of the SciPhD program.
The students were very interactive, asked good questions, and
demonstrated a keen level of understanding. Based on the fact
that the students stuck with the workshop way past its scheduled ending
time of 5:30PM on a Friday, it seems that they learned a great deal and
hopefully gained some additional confidence in developing and pursuing
their career plans.
